A couple of kids in the Kind Kollars family are asking for a pet.
Because they are kids, and speak in absolutes, they keep telling me that "ALL their friends" have pets, some even two or three. The animals range from dogs and cats to fish and turtles.
With two working adults and a 4-month-old baby, it seems irresponsible to introduce an animal to our family. But when will it be a good time?
My brother had to prove his level of responsibility by taking care of rabbits before my mother let him graduate to a dog. He even built a dog house and it sat in the backyard empty for over a year.
He finally brought home a black Lab/cocker spaniel mix and named her Jeep. He was 10.
So what is a good pet to start out with for young children. Mine are 5 and 3. While my obvious choice is a fish, how is that fulfilling any sort of need that they are feeling? You can't pet a fish. You can't even hardly touch a fish. Is there a pet out there that lives in a cage but can fulfill that need to nurture?
If you have know of a great pet for small children, let us know on our Facebook wall. We'd love to hear your ideas!
